Announcing: #OneWeek100People2018 starts Monday March 5!

February 19, 2018

Hey Everyone! All the posts for #OneWeek100People2018 have moved over HERE!

ORIGINAL POST:

We’re doing it again! The sketching challenge that pushes you to draw 100 people in one week!

Taking inspiration from online challenges such as National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), or the popular Inktober, this year from March 5th – 9th, 2018, urban sketchers Marc Taro Holmes (Montreal, CA) and Liz Steel (Sydney, AUS) invite the world to join in with #OneWeek100People2018.

Oh Hai! 2018 is in the bag! Go here for a list of  > all posts related to OneWeek100People <

Every aspiring artist has heard the advice ‘Carry a small sketchbook at all times!’. We’re all told ‘Practice drawing every day!’.

This is great advice, but sometimes we need a little extra motivation.

Last year #OneWeek100People had me running all over – from a jujitsu tournament to the rehearsal for a comic opera, to a hip-hop dance class.

You don’t have to go to such great lengths :)

Feel free to work from photos, or do a self-portrait series. It’s all fair game. However you choose to do it, the simple goal is: Draw 100 people in one week.

You can use any media you like: pencil drawings, or pen and ink, maybe digital sketches? Whatever you’d like to practice most.

The goal is PRACTICE. Not perfection. Think of us as your gym trainers. standing behind you yelling ‘Get out there! Keep your hands moving!’

100 people is a pretty fair goal. It’s a lot, but it’s not impossible.

It’s going to mean working hard or working fast. I like fast :) Last year I hit my entire goal on day one, and then had fun the rest of the week. If you’re doing 1-minute gestures, it’s only 20 minutes of work each day. (It can take you more time to find a group of people to draw :)  But, if you’re doing 20 minute watercolors – you might have to find a way to catch up later in the week.

We’re committing to draw about 20 people a day, and we’ll be posting our work every day for the week of March 5th-9th. If you want to join in, please use the hashtag #OneWeek100People2018 so everyone will be able to find your work across all the platforms people use.

We encourage you to search that hashtag every morning, and see what other people are doing!

While you’re waiting for this year to jump off, here are some graphics you can use to make a progress bar of little people :) and – if you want, have a read through all my posts from last year. Or, here’s a google for last year’s hashtag.

Best of luck!

~marc

I’m in but I don’t know how to join and I don’t know how to post my drawings. Sorry, but I don’t know what a hashtag is. I don’t use social media that much. Can someone explain this please

It’s much easier than it seems. Just use the # hashtag symbol and the keyword phrase #OneWeek100People2018. Here’s an article “Beginners Guide to the Hashtag“.

      Hola.
      ¿Quisiera saber cómo entro?
Quisiera saber cómo o dónde se cuelgan los dibujos, en caso de participar.
En caso de no participar dónde se ven los dibujos de los participantes.
      Saludos

I really want to do this or try to. But I am a complete Neanderthal on the hashtag thing and have no clue on how to do it. Any tips?

  4. February 19, 2018 10:21 PM

That’s not a week!!! It’s 5 days. :) I’m going to try. One thing I really want to get better at and FASTER at is drawing people out in public. I’m going to aim for doing at least half of the 100 from life out in the world.

I’m in, but don’t understand where to post the pictures. What’s the URL?

I have no experience in drawing people. I participated in Sktchy 30 Faces / 30 Days in January – and (to my surprise) had a lot of fun with it. What I learned is that going outside ones comfort zone really opens up new possibilities. Thank you for hosting – I’m … in!

I’ll give it a go this year, I like sketching people and it will be great practice!

  11. February 20, 2018 7:10 AM

I did it last year :) It was fun but hard work and I definitely saw improvement in my skills by the time I reached 100+ ! Will plan on doing again — some hectic days slotted for the same week though :(

Hello Mark, Great initiative ! If I draw the same model in 30 seconds and one minute poses (gesture drawing in a life drawing course ) does it qualify ? Thanks, Hélène Wermenlinger

It’s whatever *you* want to practice most Hélène :) That would be fine. I learned a great deal from the model before I ever tried drawing people in motion. Then, if you want to push into the more challenging area of drawing from life, then maybe you’ll be more confident with your practice ;) Art is wonderful in that way, that every bit of doing it helps. I wish exercise was like that!

I needed something to get me started on working through the figure drawing book that’s been sitting on my bookshelves for months now. I guess this event is the perfect motivation to prepare a bit! :)

I love the idea and want to get into it too. But why is the weekend excluded when there´s most time and possibilities to draw people? A busy week at work makes it double the challenge.

    • March 3, 2018 8:09 AM

Just draw when you can and post during the week? It’s ok – the Idea is – 5 days is the right length to keep you moving fast. But adapt the idea to fit you best :)

I’m in!!! 100 sketches in 5 days is 20 sketches a day. the minimal time required to make acceptable sketch is 5 min. It is 2 hours for daily sketching.. i guess i can do it.. i’m sure i can. :-)

    • March 4, 2018 11:07 AM

Oh, I’m sure you can make a few zingers in 2.5! Try going faster for a few, you’ll surprise yourself!

…whats a hashtag ?…and what are you going to do with all those sketches ?

    • March 6, 2018 9:55 AM

A hashtag is any text with # <this mark – such as #whatisahashtag. If you google that, you get results from Twitter, Instagram and youtube instantly! Any hashtag, in any text, on any social media platform (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, etc) serves as a flag for search engines. It's like a bat-signal that says HEY I CARE ABOUT THIS TOPIC! So you can search #topic for just about anything and find stuff that other people are doing related to that topic. We use it for this event so people can post anywhere they like, and we can find each other's work :)

I don't really do anything with these sketches! (I assume you mean, besides sharing them online). But – really I did'em to keep in shape. It's like lifting weights or playing scales. They're their own reward! :)
