It’s almost time again for #30x30DirectWatercolor2019. The annual event where we celebrate the speed and power of Direct Watercolor by making 30 paintings in 30 days in the month of JUNE 2019.

I’m sure most of you remember how this works, but let’s do a quick recap how simple it is:

  • PAINT 30 watercolors in 30 days, from June 1-30, 2019.
  • SHARE your paintings in our new Facebook group <HERE (We’d like to centralize the discussion around this group, to spare our usual sketching clubs all the extra traffic this might create :)
  • HASHTAG work on your own social pages with: #30x30DirectWatercolor2019. Here are some FAQs on how to use hashtags: FB | IG | Twitter.

#30x30_CastelliDelMondo_Paint Angry_CompositeI know it sounds like a lot – an average of one painting a day – but it doesn’t have to be.

  • Feel free to work small, feel free to work fast. Go ahead and turn up the music and do seven paintings on a Sunday afternoon.
  • Do whatever it takes to loosen up, and aim for quantity over quality.
  • Just bang one out! Don’t try to be great, just – throw it down. And if you don’t like it – throw another one on the page. Give yourself permission to just see what happens.
  • Don’t hold yourself back with high expectations. This month, there are no bad paintings.

#30x30_Day14_Parking Garage_02_WEB

Look at what happened for me last year on Day 16: my favorite painting of a parking garage. This was a real breakthrough painting for me. It represents a major shift in my work towards contemporary painting.

Forward momentum is the key. You’ll surprise yourself when you push past caring if the work is ‘good’. Or if anyone else likes it. Or if you’re using the right colors. Or getting the perspective right.

All these things fall by the wayside when you’re working intensely. Showing up in front of the paper day after day. Past the halfway, your subconscious starts dreaming about painting. When you come back the next day, the paint just flows.

So get ready – buy a stack of paper –  and we’ll see you in June!

So glad I found you. June is coming and I just unearthed my palette from last year. Are you using the same colors or different. It was challenging to me to use someone else’s color choices. We tend to get in a rut so it was a challenge just to paint with different pigments. I did keep add the Holbein gray of gray as an alternate to my palette after the challenge. This year I might try the new Daniel Smith Gray Titanium.

Sorry I will not be able to share. I do not do Facebook or Instagram. WordPress is as far as I go for social media.
