I’m moving to Instagram!
Hey everyone! I’ve set up a home for my oil paintings: @m.holmes.art.
So- what’s going on? Well – I’ve been writing about sketching on location for ten years now. In that time you’ve seen me go from an itinerant sketch-book artist to a published author and online art-instructor, and eventually, a painter inducted into our national watercolor society.
Today, in the fall of 2018, it’s time to start a new chapter.
Over on @m.holmes.art, I’ll be sharing a new body of work – alla prima painting in oils.
Life is change. Old dogs learn new tricks. As artists, we’re continually expanding our abilities and interests. I can only follow where inspiration leads.
I’ll be taking a break from CitizenSketcher for now – but I’m keeping it up online, as the blog is still a good resource for students and sketchers. But I won’t be adding to the archive or actively answering questions for a while.
Honestly, everything I have to say about art is here in these pages. In need a bit of a break to learn something new! Otherwise I wont have anything to say.
So, for the next little while, if you want to reach me, give me a follow at @m.holmes.art.
See you in the painting studio :)
~ Marc
these new works are outstanding Marc.
So sorry to hear you go.
I don’t do Instagram. I don’t do PInterest, Photobucket, Imgr, Facebook or Twitter.
So I am blocked from commenting on them plus any other media that requires any of those subscriptions.
So I’ll unsubscribe from your blog on WordPress and say best wishes.
Sorry to lose touch! I do understand why you stay off those kinds of social media. It should be a choice, and many people go down the rabbit hole without thinking where their time is going. You don’t have to unsub tho – who knows, maybe I’ll make an announcement here about something or other :) Never say never :)
Perhaps you can announce your 30×30 and similar here as a reminder. I participated this year but won’t remember next year without a reminder and I won’t know about any other likewise activities.
Thanks so much Marc. Your Craftsy classes have unlocked a world of creativity for me that I’ll be forever grateful for. I love your idea of going back to the beginning of this blog… I’ll do that. And I’m already following your new work on Instagram, even if oils aren’t my bag now.
Yet! hah! (I never thought I’d do them either – very messy and inconvenient compared to watercolor :)
Hi,
Being your account is PRIVATE, I’ve sent you a request to follow you on Instagram. Btw, I’m enrolled in 2 of your classes on Craftsy as I really your style of art.
I know that you went through a difficult time with your dad’s health…. I hope that you’re doing well,
wabi.sabi.lens (PJ Bennett)
Thanks so much for the heads up! I don’t know how I set that (by accident!). Cleary a noob mistake :)
It’s been great getting your newsletters/posts although I haven’t been able to read everything, but everything I have read has always been much enjoyed and inspiring. And like Pat L, I’ll be checking out your blog resource in new ways. Good luck with your new adventure. I’ve given you a follow on instagram – I love your mark-making in oils! Lovely landscapes I’ve seen so far, and I bet it’s great to be doing such painting in such locations. Great to connect to nature in such a way. Best wishes.
Thanks for the follow Jenny! Oh and – I don’t mean to leave a false impression – this new work is studio painting not plein-air. Mostly from my wife Laurel’s photos. (and a few of my own). The move from location-obsession to painting-indoors is all about timing. Sick parents mean no travel for a while. So I’m diving back into our years of photos and seeing what I can make in the studio.
Some of us don’t do Instagram…
Sorry to hear! It’s really not so bad :) Seconds to sign up, then you have paintings in your pocket for life :)
Congratulations to you for having the courage to evolve. It takes guts. Your paintings are beautiful! Thanks for everything.
I look forward to seeing your posts on Instagram. You can see my watercolor paintings by checking out @orangegreenbird
I look forward to seeing your posts on Instagram. Please check out my watercolor paintings @orangegreenbird
So sad. I don’t do the dumpster fire that is commonly known as social media so this is where we part ways. Best wishes for your future endeavors.
Thanks for the fun, I see your position, but I’ll be out there if you ever dip in. :)
Congrats on following your inspiration and inclinations. We all evolve…
Greatly look forward to viewing all of your new postings. Thank you so much for sharing so much information with all of us. I hope your family situation is going OK.
Thank you for all your helpful blog posts. Your new work in oil paint looks very appealing and promises to bring fresh images from your mind’s eye. I have just purchased your urban sketching book and look forward to enjoying its secrets.
Best of luck to you, Marc!! You’re a very accomplished oil painter as well, so just have a blast with it all!
Bonjour Marc, Amuses toi bien avec ce nouveau (?) médium. It looks like you already are having lots of fun. Diane
Marc, I’m a new fan and while just beginning to appreciate your sketching and WC techniques, I’m pleased to see you are starting a new chapter. Go for it!
Marc, it clear you excel at any medium you choose! I wonder ho long it’ll take me to go through all your posts since 2007. I can always use refreshing. Congrats, and I’ll see you on IG.
Marc–my sincere gratitude for all the years of inspiration. Your generous sharing of ideas and tips has been a well of knowledge that I continue dip into. I’ve always found your painting, sketches, etc., a joy to behold. Wishing you the very best in the years ahead!
So sorry to see you go; I loved getting your posts to my email. Best wishes Marc.
Marc I’m so sorry to see you go. I devoured this blog from start to finish after discovering sketching a couple of years ago, and looked forward eagerly to every new post. You have been such an inspiration to me!
I’m already following your exploits on Instagram and wish you the best of luck in your new venture.
Hi Marc, Just wanna say thank you for everything you shared on Citizen Sketcher as well as in your online classes. Almost everything I know about sketching and watercolour was from you. Are you still going to give workshops at USK symposiums though? All the best to your new adventure.
Ching
Congratulations and I look forward to your Instagram posts!
Hey Marc- I’m a fairly new follower, I like your new work and I like your older work!
Met you at Paul Smith’s college a few years back,,,, anyhow– keep on creating (and sharing!) best of luck- c
Best wishes, Marc, on your latest endeavors! I’ve learned so much from you, and will continue to, whatever you do. By the way, tell all those folks who don’t do social media that the cool thing about IG is that you don’t have to be on IG to see your posts! I have several friends who follow me without being on IG themselves. They can’t comment, of course, but if they just want to lurk, it’s easy enough (and a big improvement on Facebook, which really does keep non-Facebookers out).

You have become one of my biggest influences and I always look at your work for inspiration, thanks for sharing so much with us! I will be following your oil painting adventures on the IG.
No…… I hope you return to watercolour again soon. I liked reading every one of your post here.

Marc – thank you so much for your inspirational sketch work, craftsy videos and books. Your work inspired me to return to art, it has become my most satisfying stress reliever.
