Announcing a new book from Marc Taro Holmes and North Light Books: “The Urban Sketcher: Techniques for Seeing and Drawing on Location”

June 24, 2014

TheUrbanSketcher_MarcTaroHolmes_01

I’ve been holding in this announcement for months now! I’ve been well nigh bursting with not being able to talk about it.

Finally I can tell you guys about “The Urban Sketcher: Techniques for Seeing and Drawing on Location”.  My up coming how-to art-instructional  ‘workshop in a book’. It’s a hands on course condensing everything I’ve learned about urban sketching and drawing on location. It’s coming out in October from North Light Books, and is already available on Amazon for pre-order.

In the next few weeks I’ll have more news, some free tutorials to expand on the book content, and possibly some details about a book-related online workshop. (Possibly! If there’s enough interest :)

I want to say thanks very much for following my blog all this time. This book would not have been possible without all of your interest and involvement.

Click here to hop over to my new BOOKS page for a few teaser images and more details!

Congratulations! I know how much work you must have put in on this book, lots of very long hours and many decisions. I cannot wait to get my copy and share it with my artist friends and students. I pre-ordered from Amazon an hour ago. I also forwarded your post on to Patrick of Toscana Americana to encourage him to hire you to teach on one of his painting trips. Those trips are so much fun, I hope you will decide to teach for him. I will be the first to sign up! Again, congrats…keep up the good work.

Hi Marc! I received your book this week and have really enjoyed it. I’ve learned so much already. Thanks for the inscription and for getting it to me so quickly. I will recommend it to all my sketching friends. I did want to mention one thing. Fire your copy editor! I tripped over so many typos while reading the text. If you ever need a “friendly reader” let me know. Copy editing is something I’ve done for years. That said, I do like the personal style you’ve used. It reads like I expect your conversation sounds. The images and color are also very nice and I like the layout too. All-in-all a terrific book.
    Cheers!

Heh. Hey Paula – great to hear you’re enjoying it! And thanks very much for future recommendations. That’s the life blood of a book!

I hear you on the copy editing – maybe one day when the publisher and I have a dozen books out and we’re all laughing around the country club together, I can tell you guys the true story behind that :) There’s some rough edges in the hard-scrabble book biz these days. But I’ve decided I’m just excited to get the material out to people, so I can’t be too down about it. Here’s hoping for a second printing someday! I hope we’ll get them then :)

Hey Marc. I, by no means, meant to put a damper on the book. I really do think it’s great, typos and all. Congratulations and here’s to many more. Cheers!

Hi Marc :-) Great resource! I am a university student who organises a closed Facebook group. The group is organised around monthly drawing challenges based on a theme. I encourage group members to purchase a copy of this resource. If I adapt content from this book for the challenges how may I avoid copyright issues? At present I merely propose a theme per month without providing much detail other than general guidance on how to approach challenges. Cheers, Darin.
