USK:MTL Dim Sum Sketchcrawl
March 24, 2013
Met with the Montreal Urban Sketchers for Dim Sum (and sketching), followed by some drawing in Chinatown. It is *almost* warm enough to draw outside in Montreal. I have high hopes for next month’s sketchcrawl.
Sketches are in the moleskine, pencil noodles, color in pelikan gouache (pans), and a little ballpoint pen accent. About 15 minute drawings outside then colored over a bubble tea and bbq pork buns.

Okay, this is seriously starting to drive me nuts….your artwork is so wonderful, and I follow you on Urban Sketchers and here, and how, how HOW do you get that peculiar warmth into your sky washes? I can’t figure out any of the pigments on your palette at all, it’s baffling. I’ve become fairly good at it over time, but you’ve stymied me.
Have you ever done a post listing your paint selection? It’s so distinct. Love the way you use granulators.
Also…um….hello from a fan in Halifax?
Hey Halifax, nice to meet you :)
So, the thing with the color – I was using a 30 year old set of pelikan gouache pans – so I honestly can’t say what colors ended up in there – the trick is a very dirty palette. With these big round ‘kids’ pans you just smear one color on top of another trying to soap up something to paint with. If I was using tubes, I’d be aiming for cerulean, and then dirtied with a lilac, some burnt sienna (orange neutralizes the cyan), maybe some sap green, touch of magenta – always neutralizing – or whatever other dirt is in the corners of your trays to grey it. Also , the moleskines have a very yellow paper, which adds an undertone to it all.
Marc! I love that photo of everyone sketching the food or each other. So grand. And your own offerings are superb as always. As to the questions from theadventurousone: do I detect cerulean blue? The rest I -am guessing- could be made from the primaries.
My ‘home colors’ are cerulean, aliziran crimson and burnt sienna (kind of my yellow), I paint everything with those plus sap green for foliage – then the rest of the palette is used to dirty those into greys.
wish I was there- my kind of sketchcrawl – ha! but we have a dinner scheduled in July!
