In the summer of 2015 I had a special opportunity to visit Raptor Inc., Cincinatti. They’re a non-profit offering educational programs and doing research and rehabilitation of rescued birds.
I was on hand with a film crew from Artist Network TV and we’ve made a one hour sketching video showing three drawings start-to-finish – a Great Horned Owl, a Falcon, and a Turkey Vulture.
1 Hour Video Sketching Demonstration

You discover so much observing a live animal at close range. It’s a fascinating way to learn about nature – and a real drawing challenge. These models don’t hold still for you! But it’s a very natural extension of what any street sketcher does sketching people on the go. I was excited to apply the principles from my People in Motion classes to these fascinating creatures.
The one hour video is available as part of the all-you-can-view subscription package at ArtistNetwork.tv. Here’s a link to find out more about the video and the subscription plans.
Over the next three weeks we will be releasing three more in this sketching series – covering the topics of street sketching, drawing panoramas, and travel sketch-booking. Subscribers will be able to watch all four of my video demonstrations, as well as over 400 other art instructional programs in all media.
The Artist Network videos are also available on DVD or by Digital Download from the North Light Shop.
I hope you’ll enjoy watching me work with these magnificent animals. I get a small royalty for each view on the network or any dvd/download sales. Your support make this blogging and teaching possible – so thanks, and I hope you can pick up a few tips!
