#30×30, 2025, Day 15: Day Off for Urban Sketching

June 15, 2025

Out and about on the Montreal Plateau with some friends. Just sketching for fun. Something is happening to me – as I get older, a really nice day is almost euphoric! It’s not worth it to be inside!

Have to say – I kind of love these cars I’ve drawn :)

I don’t usually put the cars in – but lately I’m feeling they add some urban-ness, some signs of life.

But look at all the line drawing in this sketch! Really lazy today! Hah!

This isn’t really a direct watercolor painting to be honest. Can I call it ‘Crazy Person Adult Coloring Book?

Take this advice if any of you are planning to become art-bloggers! Never go around talking about RULES when it comes to art. You open your big mouth too many times and you’re just going to get into trouble later on :) Nobody forgets the things you say!

But I feel like those were the ground rules for event so I am a little stuck:)

What would you guys think if we changed it next year to be all-media? Would all the water-painters who participate go on strike in protest?

Really – it’s the same value for everyone right? The encouragement to paint every day is more the point, it’s never been about HOW you paint.

Let me know what you guys think in the comments.

Rules aare made to be broken…like not adding white paint to a watercolor! And besides, the 30×30 is a personal adventure…

My favorite mantras: Success is the progressive realization of a worthwhile plan or goal.

So doing 30×30 in watercolor, oil, pastel or finger paints – it’s the pursuit towards a worthwhile goal that really matters…

Love your paintings and enjoy your musings Mr. Marc!

enjoy reading your blog. You are relatable and down to earth. These days you get the feeling from other artists blogs that it is about selling. Which I definitely don’t get that from yours. I appreciate that!

I agree rules are to be broken, especially in art. The rest of life is full of rules, and I generally follow them. So I am happy to have a place of freedom with art. Which leads to: yes, I would definitely participate and welcome the group changing in future years to all media. If I may say, the essence is 30 days, paint everyday (if you can), and community.

Gosh how I love your urban sketches and it looks like you had a beautiful day with friends. Your cars definitely “add life” to the overall painting. Your color palette is vibrant, the trees are mesmerizing, and that building is awesome!

Art Rules – I seldom follow rules because I like ‘doing my own thing.’ I read a comment the other day about ‘pencil marks’ in watercolor. I always use pencil for sketching & actually like seeing pencil in the final watercolor. Many people ‘poo poo’ that – but everybody should do what they enjoy.

It would be great to have an “all media” next year because I enjoy adding collage to many of my watercolor and/or acrylic paintings. If anybody wants to “go on strike;” that’s their choice. All I care about is creating something every single day. I sometimes create 3-5 paintings, sculptures, jewelry every day – but I’m retired with lots of time. I worked from age 16-62 years of age. Now my plan is to create art every single day because it makes me happy. Who doesn’t want to be happy every day?

    1. Love your latest post of WC scenes that include cars!
    2. I often sketch in parking lots after shopping, sketching trees, buildings and cars
    3. Never painted an outdoor sketch that included cars….I WILL now!
    4. I prefer seeing your WC sketches over all other media you have used

I think those of us who only do watercolor probably just want to be looking at watercolor examples in this challenge. I certainly love looking at oil paintings, but it doesn’t much help me with my practice en aquarelle.
