Day Nine: Quebec City

Nothing to see here except some sketches that aren’t as good as yesterday!

Tomorrow we’ll start posting our second video critique! Looking back right now, I have no idea why I wanted to paint these. Maybe I’ll have something of an explanation?

    I love the honesty.

I think you’re being too hard on yourself – or maybe your heart just isn’t into this right now? I like them both, especially the second one. The movement in the sky, the way you have lead the eye to the door and down the street – the boldness of color. It may not have been what you imagined, but they are good paintings!!

    Hi Marc,

I found this post of yours particularly motivating. Because I have the same question (Why did I want to paint this?) often at the moment. I do my best to sketch each day, and often enough I just choose a motive a little arbitrarily – and it shows in the lame sketch. :-) It is motivating that something similar seems to happen to an artist such as you, too!

Thank you for your wonderful art and for your super-clear and engaging way to teach – both in your book and your online classes.

    Love it!

All the best wishes from Munich, Germany,

    Peer

Marc, I love your stuff. Have your book and bought your sketching course. I would love to learn more about your brush use–your calligraphy is so amazing. Can you talk more about your use of the brush: speed, pressure, use of tip, side, etc of brush? Thank you.

Looks whimsical and well composed as always, Marc. Off topic question. Do you think playing video games helps with hand eye coordination with painting? After all you are laser focused when you play.

That is a very good question. I mean, gaming clearly does help your brisk decision making and pattern recognition and mental things like that – but I suppose a sport or playing violin might help more :) Or differently? It would be interesting to do a study of gamers vs athletes vs a control group to see who has the more fulfilled life. I will have to say I know people with ability at all three that are kind of amazingly talented – so I do expect having a healthy fit body supports every aspect of life and art!

I like your B&W’s, but it’s not too late to switch to color if you’re craving it.
